There’s more to life than being Queen Bee. Unfortunately, though, Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen kind of missed this memo. She’s just too busy these days rehearsing barbs at Blair and her other onscreen rivals. Oh, and promoting her “Love Rocks” (a.k.a. the latest celeb-parfum). Though, with all the bad PR surrounding her recent gaffe to OK! Magazine, the “eau de Taylor” will likely turn out to be a stinkbomb in sales. Unless of course, it’s being marketed to other narcissistic teens who routinely forget their soul at home because they can’t get it to fit in their handbag. You know, ‘cause there are other more important things to stuff in there, like your eyeliner and iphone. Sigh. 

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, Momsen revealed that she doesn’t have the time to care about the devastation Haiti is experiencing in the aftermath of last Tuesday’s 7.0 earthquake. “Um, right now I’m trying to just finish my record and getting through the last season of Gossip Girl for right now. So, not so much thinking about that.” 

But, she concedes, “It’s awesome that everyone is, ya know, working towards a good cause.” (That’s Taylor’s soul trying to peak out from under 5 pounds of black eyeshadow and hair extensions.) 

Fortunately elsewhere, compassion is a bit more visible. The food and wine industry, despite needing its own rescue mission amidst the volatile economy, is scrounging up cash to donate to the relief effort. If you’re in New York on January 24 or 25, you can “dine out for Haiti”, with part of the proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders, Action Against Hunger, Partners in Health, the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, and the United Nations World Food Program. So, you can order a bottle of wine and feel good knowing that part of the 300% mark up is saving lives. 

Or, you can enroll in Monday night’s wine tasting class at Astor Wines and Spirits over in the East Village. Your $75 fee, and quest for knowledge, will help support Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross.

Of course if you’re cash-poor and wine-rich, consider donating bottles to Palate Press, an online wine publication that is collecting wines from individuals and wineries to sell in an online auction. If the reverse, buy wine. Lots of it. And drink at home, while watching Gossip Girl grooving to the new Hope for Haiti Now cd. Your intoxication will benefit the Red Cross.
